The five-day cruise of the African Queen on the Thames was exactly what I’d been looking for, but it exceeded all my expectations. Living on a Dutch barge for days on end; getting back to nature and seeing the English countryside up close; enjoying the hospitality and companionship on board; having restaurant-quality food every day; mooring for the night near small villages. It was different, and hugely enjoyable. Bonnie and Andy, our hosts, welcomed us on board at Mapledurham on a Wednesday afternoon (there were 12 of us). With their kindness and helpfulness, we couldn’t have had anyone better. Andy is a natural storyteller and kept us entertained with stories of South Africa (and ask him about buying the African Queen in Ireland and having to sail it to the Thames!). Bonnie’s excellent (and unobtrusive) organisation kept everything going smoothly. And hard-working Liza and Gabriel, who served the meals and drinks and did so much else, were absolutely lovely, always good-natured and obliging. And for five days Bonnie and Liza and Gabriel did an amazing job of keeping us fed. The first night set the standard with a wonderful Cape Malay dinner (Bonnie is South African), and we had beautiful three-course meals throughout the cruise, sitting together at a long table in the warm and comfortable lounge/dining room. Living on a barge was a great experience. My cabin was small, as expected, but functional, and the shower worked brilliantly. The marine-style toilet just added to the feeling of adventure. And out on the sun deck, where we lived most of the time (even when the weather turned a bit cold and drizzly), it was magical: sitting on a deck chair, with a cup of coffee warming your hands, chatting to the others or silently taking in the peacefulness of the scene, suddenly jumping up to take yet another photo of a swan or passing skiff! Going through locks or waiting your turn to go through; Andy on the helm, bantering with the lock-keepers and other river users; Gabriel leaping down to tie the barge to a mooring. On this reach of the Thames we were in Wind in the Willows and Three Men in a Boat country, and we loved being part of the scene (for others to photograph from the towpath!) as we glided along at 5 miles an hour, past all kinds of wildfowl, lush meadows with grazing cattle, banks lined thickly with willows and other trees, impressive houses, and all the other traffic out on the river. Knowing that for the time being we belonged to the community of the river. While there was a lot of travelling slowly along the river (which I loved), there was also the variety of mooring at different villages and towns (Goring, Wallingford, Mapledurham, Sonning, Henley-on-Thames) and having time to explore them or walk further up the river along the towpath. One day we moored at Goring for a lovely lunch at a riverside restaurant, and another evening there was dinner and a play (Noel Coward, appropriately) at the Mill at Sonning Theatre. What has stayed with me most, though, is the feeling of being surrounded by nature as we cruised through the gentle leafy countryside – and also the togetherness we developed as a group. After our final meal, a Sunday roast on board, we told Bonnie and Andy what a great time we’d had and what a great group it had been. They replied, ‘Every group says that!’ That’s what the African Queen does for you. Review from Margaret Haughey who was visiting the UK from New Zealand
