A festive cruise along the Rhine with Oz Clarke

It is hard to imagine a scene more festive than Place Kleber in Strasbourg as Christmas draws near. You will find a huge fir tree towering over the wooden market chalets as lights twinkle around the g¬¬rand historic square. Shoppers will be milling around, seeking the perfect gift as the sweet aroma of mulled wine wafts in the air. Dating back as far as 1570, the Strasbourg Christmas market remains one of the most atmospheric – as you will discover on the final stop of this great-value festive cruise along the Rhine later this year. Joining you as you explore the markets and history of this wonderful region is a guest well placed to put you in a festive mood: Oz Clarke, one of Britain’s best known wine experts. He will lead exclusive tastings of some of the top vintages of Alsace and beyond during this four-day journey. Travelling in the four-star MS Serenity, this is the ideal way to see some of the world’s most charming Christmas markets.

Day 1: UK – Mainz
We travel to Mainz, where the Rhine and Main rivers meet, and enjoy a relaxing evening onboard our ship.

Day 2: Mannheim
We reach Mannheim in the early morning and have plenty of free time to enjoy the Christmas market. The city is located at the union of the Rhine and the Neckar rivers, and offers lots of sightseeing opportunities; the Mannheim Palace, a stunning baroque structure which now houses the university; the Luisenpark, noted as one of the most beautiful parks in Europe; and the Fernmeldeturm Mannheim, an impressive telecommunication tower complete with observation deck. However, the main attraction during winter months is undoubtedly the Christmas market – one of the largest in southwest Germany! Lunchtime sees us heading off to Heidelberg for more Christmas markets. Extending over five historic market squares and featuring around 140 stalls, you are guaranteed to find that special gift! We set sail in the early evening, heading towards Strasbourg.

Day 3: Strasbourg
Enjoy a full day in the remarkable city of Strasbourg. See the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, a gothic masterpiece; the stunning Kammerzell House which dates back to the 15th century; the Petite France district with its beautiful riverside setting; and the Church of Saint-Thomas, an excellent example of Alsatian gothic art. The Strasbourg Christmas Market is said to be the oldest and largest in Europe, dating back to the 1570s. Voted the Best European Christmas Market for the last two years running, it is spread over 11 areas of the city and features a huge Christmas tree standing at almost 100 feet. Add to this the themed events, several hundred miles of Christmas lights and giant ice rink, and this market will undoubtedly be the highlight of your cruise!

Day 4: Mainz – UK
We bid farewell to the captain and his crew and set off on the return journey to the UK.

•  Christmas markets
This part of the world is famed for its Christmas markets and with good reason: they are among the finest you will find anywhere. You will have the chance visit atmospheric markets – and snap up ideal gifts for family and friends – in three separate places: Mannheim, Heidelberg and the French city of Strasbourg, where the historic Christmas market was recently voted the best in Europe for the second consecutive year.

•  Cruise along the Rhine
This is the way to travel between Christmas markets: on a comfortable four-star cruise ship that glides along the Rhine. You will travel on the MS Serenity, a stylish claret and cream river cruise ship with excellent facilities including a panoramic restaurant, lounge bar and cosy cabins.

•  Mannheim and Heidelberg
As well the Christmas markets, you will have the chance to explore some delightful towns. In Mannheim, where the waters of the Rhine meet the Neckar, discover fine baroque architecture and Luisenpark, known as one of Europe’s finest parks. In Heidelberg visit the evocative ruined castle and take in its magnificent riverside setting, admired by visitors from Mark Twain to the great landscape painter, JMW Turner.

•  Historic Strasbourg
Alongside the markets, Strasbourg offers much to discover. See the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, a gothic masterpiece, the ornate Kammerzell House, which is one of the city’s most well preserved medieval buildings; the Petite France district with its beautiful riverside setting; and the Church of Saint-Thomas, a fine example of Alsatian gothic art.
