D-Day Landing Beaches River Cruise with Dan Snow

Join us aboard the MS Renoir as we take an in-depth look at the events that shaped our modern world and listen as Dan Snow reflects on what was the first step on the road to Victory in the West. That’s not all this sensational cruise has to offer... you’ll have plenty of time to relax as we cruise through the scenic French countryside and the quaint riverside towns that shaped the course of the Second World War. With history and culture combined and the comforts of our ship never far away, this is an unforgettable experience you won’t want to miss.

Day 1: UK – Paris
We travel to Paris and join our ship, the MS Renoir. After you’ve settled into your cabin, we’ll enjoy a welcome cocktail followed by dinner and a relaxing evening onboard our ship.

Day 2: Château de Martainville
This morning we arrive in the pretty little town of Les Andelys where we will cross Le Petit Andelys village and sail by the 16th century St Sauveur Church. This afternoon, join our optional coach excursion through the villages that lie alongside the Andelle River, before arriving at the Château de Martainville. The château was built at the end of the 15th century by Jacques Le Pelletier, before being bought by the state in 1906 and turned into a museum in 1961. Here you can immerse yourself in more than 500 years of rural Normandy history. We return to the ship in Rouen where our guest speaker Dan Snow will join us for an evening of Q&A. Later this evening we set sail and cruise along the Seine towards Honfleur.

Day 3: D-Day Landing Beaches, Honfleur
This morning we arrive in Honfleur, which lies between the estuaries where the water of the River Seine meets the English Channel. The Port of Honfleur was not directly affected by the Normandy beach landings; it’s one of the rare villages that came out of the war nearly intact. Here we have a full day exploring this picturesque region, soaking up the atmosphere on our included excursion, as we tour some of the key locations that featured in the D-Day Landings. Dan Snow will join us to give us a second talk, setting the scene for the circumstances leading up to D-Day.

Day 4: Duclair – Rouen
After breakfast you can join our optional excursion to explore the Norman Abbey Circuit. We set off by coach from Caudebec in the company of a local guide and the excursion begins with a visit to the Jumièges Abbey. Built in 654 when Christianity arrived in the region, and subsequently destroyed by the Vikings, the abbey was restored in the 11th century by their descendants. This afternoon, we rejoin the MS Renoir and set sail towards Rouen where there’s the chance to join our optional guided tour of the historical capital of Normandy, once described by Victor Hugo as ‘the city of a hundred spires’. The city was heavily damaged on D-Day during World War II and its famed cathedral was very nearly destroyed by Allied bombs. This evening you can relax onboard and enjoy a delicious Gala Dinner.

Day 5: Rouen - Paris
This morning will be spent sailing along the banks of the River Seine towards Paris, where we arrive in the early afternoon. Here, there’s the chance to join our optional panoramic tour of Paris taking in some of the most iconic sights, such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysees.

Day 6: Paris – UK
After breakfast we bid farewell to our hosts and disembark for the return journey to the UK.
